Moving to Spain can be one of the best decisions you ever make.

Why It’s Easy to Gain Weight After Moving to Spain

Moving to Spain can be one of the best decisions you ever make.

Better weather.
More time outside.
A slower pace of life.
More socialising.
More meals out.
More time enjoying yourself.

But for many people, it also comes with something they did not expect.

Weight gain.

It does not happen because you are lazy.

It usually happens because your lifestyle changes.

Your routine changes.
Your food changes.
Your social life changes.
Your activity levels change.

And slowly, without really noticing, the weight starts to creep on.

Here are some of the main reasons it is easy to gain weight after moving to Spain.

1. You Eat Out More Often

When people move to Spain, eating out often becomes part of normal life.

Breakfast at a café.
Lunch in the sun.
Tapas with friends.
Evening meals out.
Visitors coming over.
Social events during the week.

Back home, you might have eaten out once per week.

In Spain, it can easily become several times per week.

The problem is not that restaurant food is bad.

The problem is that restaurant meals are usually higher in calories than meals you cook at home.

There is often more oil, bigger portions, extra bread, sauces, desserts, and drinks.

Even if the meal looks healthy, it can still be much higher in calories than you realise.

If this happens a few times per week, it can quickly add up.

You do not need to stop eating out.

You just need to learn how to manage it better.

2. Alcohol Becomes More Regular

A lot of people drink more after moving to Spain.

Not always a lot in one go, but more often.

A beer in the sun.
Wine with dinner.
Drinks with friends.
A few at the weekend.
A few when family visit.
A few because the weather is nice.

It is easy for alcohol to become a regular part of the week.

The problem is that alcohol contains calories.

A few drinks can easily add the same calories as a meal.

Alcohol can also make it harder to make good food choices.

After a few drinks, you are more likely to snack, eat more, order takeaway, or say yes to food you were not planning to have.

You do not need to stop drinking completely.

But if you are trying to lose weight, you need to be aware of how often you drink and how many calories it adds.

3. Your Routine Changes

When you move country, your normal routine changes.

Back home, you may have had more structure.

Work hours.
Gym times.
Meal times.
School runs.
Daily habits.
A normal weekly routine.

After moving to Spain, that structure can disappear.

You might eat at different times.
Stay up later.
Socialise more.
Walk less.
Train less.
Snack more.
Drink more often.

At first, this can feel nice because life feels more relaxed.

But without a routine, it becomes much easier to gain weight.

Most people do not need a perfect routine.

They just need some structure.

A few planned workouts.
A rough food plan.
Regular meal times.
Daily steps.
Some accountability.

Without that, it is very easy for healthy habits to slip.

4. The Lifestyle Can Feel Like a Holiday

This is one of the biggest reasons people gain weight after moving to Spain.

At first, it can feel like you are on holiday.

The sun is out.
You are eating outside.
Friends and family visit.
There are more meals out.
There are more drinks.
Life feels more relaxed.

That is great when you are on holiday for one or two weeks.

But if you live like you are on holiday all year, weight gain is very likely.

The habits that are fine for a short holiday can become a problem when they become your everyday lifestyle.

More alcohol.
More eating out.
More snacks.
Less structure.
Less training.
Less routine.

You can still enjoy living in Spain.

You should enjoy it.

But you need to find a balance between enjoying your life and looking after your health.

5. You Move Less Than You Think

A lot of people think they will be more active when they move to Spain.

And some people are.

But many people actually move less than they realise.

They drive everywhere.
They avoid walking when it is hot.
They sit outside more.
They spend more time at cafés and restaurants.
They stop going to the gym.
They do fewer structured workouts.

The weather is better, but that does not automatically mean you are more active.

Walking, training, and daily movement still need to be part of your routine.

If your steps are low and you are eating and drinking more, weight gain becomes much easier.

You do not need to do anything extreme.

Start with simple things.

Go for a walk in the morning.
Walk after dinner.
Train three times per week.
Park slightly further away.
Use the cooler parts of the day to move more.

Small changes can make a big difference over time.

6. You Put Yourself Last

Moving to Spain can be exciting, but it can also be stressful.

There is a lot to sort out.

Housing.
Paperwork.
Work.
Family.
Bank accounts.
Appointments.
Settling into a new area.
Building a new routine.

When life gets busy, fitness and nutrition often get pushed to the bottom of the list.

You tell yourself you will sort it out soon.

Then a few weeks become a few months.

Before you know it, you have gained weight, feel less fit, and do not feel like yourself.

This is very common.

But the longer you leave it, the harder it can feel to start again.

You do not need to wait until everything is perfect.

You can start small.

A few workouts per week.
Better food choices.
More steps.
Less alcohol during the week.
A simple routine you can stick to.

Small changes done consistently are better than waiting months for the perfect time to start.

How to Stop the Weight Creeping On

If you have gained weight since moving to Spain, you are not alone.

It happens to a lot of people.

The good news is, you do not need to completely change your life to fix it.

You can still eat out.
You can still have a drink.
You can still enjoy living here.
You can still have a social life.

But you need a plan.

You need to be aware of your calories.
You need to move more.
You need to train consistently.
You need to build a routine.
You need to stop treating every week like a holiday.

The goal is not to stop enjoying Spain.

The goal is to enjoy Spain while still feeling fit, healthy, and confident.
